Why S460 works on ship plates

Ship plates are thick, with heavy rust and mill scale. Shot that is too hard bounces off the surface; shot that is too soft breaks into powder within days and clogs the dust collector.

S460 (1.2–1.4 mm, 50–60 HRC, double tempered) stays whole on impact. Surface roughness remains stable at Rz75-100 μm, meeting the Sa2.5 requirement of the classification societies — passed on first inspection.

The cost calculation

One ton of S460 cleans about 30% more plate area than low-grade shot, because fewer particles break down and the working mix keeps its grading.

Add lower dust load, less wear on the blast machine, and fewer rework jobs — total cost per square meter comes out around 20–30% lower than cheap product, even though the price per ton is a few hundred yuan higher.
