Why Container Blasting Is a Special Case
Container bodies are built from weathering steel (CORTEN-type) sheets, typically 1.6-2.0mm thick. The blast line must remove mill scale, rust and rolling residues completely — normally to ISO 8501-1 Sa2.5 — before the shop primer is applied, yet the sheets are thin enough to warp or dent if the abrasive impact is too aggressive. At the same time, container plants run high-throughput conveyor blasting at several meters per minute, so the abrasive must deliver consistent cleaning at line speed without frequent media changes.

Choosing Steel Shot for Container Lines
- Thin sheet blasting: round shot S230-S280 with hardness around HRC 40-45 cleans thoroughly while minimizing sheet deformation; softer shot also reduces wear on the blasting chamber liners;
- Mixed sections: plants that blast sheets, frames and corner castings on the same line often run a blend of shot and fine grit, letting angular particles cut heavy scale on thicker components while round particles finish the sheets;
- Hardness balance: harder media (above HRC 50) cuts faster but breaks down quickly on thin-sheet work and raises consumption — medium hardness gives the best cost balance for container duty;
- Size discipline: oversize particles create profile peaks that can telegraph through thin primer films, so screening the mix regularly keeps the size distribution inside the target range.
Keeping the Line Stable at High Throughput
A few operating habits make the difference between stable quality and rework:
- Track abrasive consumption per container or per ton of steel — a rising number usually signals a worn mix or a separator that is losing usable grit with the dust;
- Tune the separator air curtain each shift so fines are removed but serviceable shot stays in the system;
- Control humidity between blasting and priming: freshly cleaned weathering steel flash-rusts quickly in moist air, and many lines hold dew-point discipline before the shop primer goes on;
- Inspect wheels, blades and control cage regularly — at conveyor speeds of several meters per minute, even small wear changes the impact pattern and leaves uncleaned streaks;
- Verify cleanliness and profile against comparators (ISO 8501-1 visual standards, ISO 8503 profile comparators or replica tape) at set intervals rather than only when complaints appear.
Consistent abrasive quality is one of the cheapest levers a container plant has: stable Sa2.5 quality, uniform profile, lower consumption and fewer priming defects all come from a disciplined shot mix.
