A large share of blasting dust is abrasive that has broken down inside the machine. Switching to steel shot with better sphericity and lower breakage can cut collector dust roughly in half and trim consumption by around 30%.

Between October 9 and 10, 2026, Nanning, Yulin and Beihai in Guangxi, together with Rongchang in Chongqing, issued yellow heavy-pollution alerts under a tier-III response, placing gas-related enterprises on staggered production or output curbs. In past years these alerts clustered after November. This year they arrived in early October.

For a shop running shot blasting, that is not a minor detail. Blast cleaning is a gas-related process: several machines running at once can fill several bags of collector dust in a single day. Once a plant is listed on the local emergency reduction schedule, the process gets curtailed.

You cannot control the alert. You can control the abrasive.

Where blasting dust actually comes from

Not all of it is rust and paint coming off the plate. A meaningful share is the abrasive breaking down.

Steel shot strikes the wheel, the plate and other shot thousands of times. Brittle, cracked or poorly shaped grain fractures into powder and leaves with the dust collector. Higher breakage means more dust and faster filter changes.

On the same machine, with the same plate, sphericity, hardness uniformity and sulphur/phosphorus content decide how much powder a batch generates.

Three specs that cut dust and energy

Sphericity. More irregular grain means more fracture. On October 2, 2026, we tightened the non-spherical particle limit in our Low-Carbon Steel Shot standard Q/HX 001-2026 from 15% to 5%.

Hardness and uniformity. For plate and structural work, alloy cast steel shot at HRC 40-50 balances impact and toughness. Same-batch hardness deviation is held within ±15 HV, so machine settings stop drifting.

Cycle life. Longer life means less top-up and less fracture dust. The revised standard sets cycle life at 2,200 cycles or more.

Three numbers to plan before an alert

Dust. Lower-breakage media reduces the dust load, so filter bags and disposal cost less.

Energy. Better sphericity and even sizing reach the same profile at lower wheel speed, cutting motor load.

Compliance. A stable profile at Sa2.5 with Rz 75-100 μm passes inspection first time, which matters most when capacity is already tight.
