The conversation we keep having with shipyards is simple: blasting cost is not won by paying less per tonne. It is won by using the right abrasive.

Why a single size no longer holds up

A hull has thick rust zones, thin plates and ballast tanks, each wanting a different profile. Run one size — say S390 — across all of it, and the thick zones come back for a second pass while the thin plates get blasted too deep, trapping moisture under the primer.

Class inspectors catch it. The section gets redone, and the labour, abrasive and schedule all go with it.

What our grading system does

Wuhan Hongxin Lixin set up a PhD team in 2022 to build this system. Feed in the machine model, plate material and target roughness, and it returns the mix ratio for steel shot and grit.

The product range to draw from is broad: alloy steel shot S230–S780, angular steel grit G12–G120, stainless steel shot Ø0.3–Ø2.5 mm. The profile lands inside Sa2.5 / Rz75-100 μm, passing inspection first time, with about 30% lower consumption — one tonne of graded abrasive does the work of roughly 1.3 tonnes of a single size.

Shipyards already running it

Huahai Shipbuilding has used our abrasive since 2008. Gezhouba Shipbuilding and Wuchang Shipbuilding run the same programme.
