A single-size abrasive does one job well and everything else poorly. That is the sentence most blasting foremen eventually arrive at.

Thick rust zones come back for a second pass. Thin plates get blasted too deep, and the anchor pattern traps moisture under the primer. It shows up months later as blistering, or immediately at the class survey stage.

Why graded mixes beat single sizes

A blast profile has a window to hit. Too shallow and the primer cannot grip. Too deep and moisture sits in the valleys.

Graded mixes — steel shot and grit in proportions matched to the plate, the machine and the target profile — hold that window across a whole hull. In customer trials, one ton of graded abrasive does the work of about 1.3 tons of single-size product.

How the grading system works

Since 2022 our PhD team has refined the system around one input set: machine model, plate material, target roughness. Put those in and it returns a mix ratio.

Huahai Shipbuilding, Gezhouba Shipbuilding and Wuchang Shipbuilding have used it for years on plate pre-treatment and hull work.
